Use Cases

© BPortier
To complement the guidance and tools that have been compiled by the working group and are available on this website we thought it might be useful to write-up short examples of both successful and unsuccessful efforts by community support partners to engage effectively with community efforts to govern access to and use of natural resources within their traditional territories. We use the term “use case” rather than “case study” because these are intended to be examples of community support partners actually using the guidance and tools believed essential for effective engagement with Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

The use cases do not provide an exhaustive list of examples but we hope to expand the number and range of use cases over time.
We think that the use cases might make the guidance offered more tangible as they provide real-world examples of how community support partners have actually engaged with communities, and the lessons they learned during that engagement. If you would like to share a “use case” based on your work with Indigenous Peoples and local communities please draft a document with the following four components and email to

An example of a minor failure in a Free, Prior and Informed Consent process in north eastern Democratic Republic of Congo

The Ogiek of Kenya reclaim their Mount Elgon territory and restore traditional governance

Building local constituencies and governance institutions for conservation in Pakistan

The Tacana Indigenous Peoples of Bolivia set their own sustainable quotas for caiman
